Most clock faces show four o'clock as IIII, not IV. It looks like a mistake to modern eyes, but it is a deliberate clockmaking tradition that has held for centuries. Here is why, and where the exceptions are.
Why clocks use IIII, not IV
Nobody can prove a single origin, which is part of the charm. These are the explanations horologists return to, and most real dials owe something to more than one of them.
- Visual balance. IIII sits directly opposite VIII, so the two heaviest numerals mirror each other and the dial reads as symmetrical. It also splits the face into three tidy zones: the first four hours use only I, the next four introduce V, and the last four bring in X.
- Casting convenience. When numerals were cast or cut in metal, using IIII meant the twelve hours needed exactly twenty I shapes, four V shapes and four X shapes. Those divide neatly into identical moulds, which was simpler to produce than a set that included a lone IV.
- The IVPITER taboo. IV were also the opening letters of IVPITER, the Latin spelling of Jupiter. One old explanation holds that craftsmen avoided stamping a shortened, subtractive IV so as not to abbreviate a god's name.
- The Louis XIV story. A popular anecdote credits King Louis XIV of France with preferring IIII and having his clockmakers comply. It is a charming legend rather than documented fact, but it shows how long the debate has run.
