Dates, done right

Roman numeral date tattoos

A date tattoo has three decisions in it: the order, the separator and the layout. This page settles all three, with worked examples you can check against the stencil generator.

Pick the order first

A Roman numeral date is the day, the month and the year converted separately and set in sequence. Day-month-year (XIV . VII . MMXXVI for 14 July 2026) is the usual order outside the United States; month-day-year (VII . XIV . MMXXVI) inside it. Neither is more correct, but the choice is invisible once inked: III . V could be the 3rd of May or March 5th, and nothing on the skin says which convention is in use. So decide the order deliberately, and if the tattoo carries more than one date, use the same order for all of them.

Worked birthday examples

Six dates converted in both orders, dotted inline style. Any of them can be rendered as a downloadable stencil by the generator.

DateDay - month - yearMonth - day - year
1 January 2000I . I . MMI . I . MM
14 February 1998XIV . II . MCMXCVIIIII . XIV . MCMXCVIII
4 July 1990IV . VII . MCMXCVII . IV . MCMXC
23 August 2001XXIII . VIII . MMIVIII . XXIII . MMI
25 December 2024XXV . XII . MMXXIVXII . XXV . MMXXIV
31 October 2026XXXI . X . MMXXVIX . XXXI . MMXXVI

Two details worth noticing in that table. Single-digit days and months stay short (I, IV, VII), so a date can look lopsided inline; stacking fixes that. And the year does the heavy lifting: a 1990s year starts MCM, a 2000s year MM, which is why two people's dates from different decades sit together best stacked rather than side by side.

Couple and anniversary dates

For two dates, the layouts that keep both readable are: one date per line, stacked in the same order and typeface; the two dates on one line separated by a symbol you can live with forever; or a matching pair, one date on each person. Converting each date separately is the rule either way. Resist the urge to merge shared digits: the numerals stop being decodable, and decodability is the whole charm of the form.

For a wedding or anniversary year on its own, the year alone is the classic minimal choice: MMXXVI for 2026 reads cleanly at small sizes and needs no separators at all. The current year is walked through letter by letter at how to write 2026, and any other year 1900 to 2100 has the same treatment.

Check it before it is permanent

Every part of a date tattoo should round-trip: numeral back to number, number back to numeral, same result both ways. The subtractive pairs are where handwritten conversions slip (IV against VI, IX against XI, XL against LX), and a date has up to three places for that slip to hide. The converter validates both directions and rejects non-standard spellings, and the generator uses the same engine, then hands you a vector stencil your artist can scale without redrawing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write my birthday in Roman numerals?

Convert the day, the month and the year separately, then set them in your chosen order. A birthday on 14 July 1995 becomes XIV VII MCMXCV in day-month-year order, or VII XIV MCMXCV in month-day order. The generator renders it and gives you a printable stencil.

Should a date tattoo be day-month-year or month-day-year?

Both are correct; pick the order you read dates in. Day-month-year is usual outside the United States, month-day-year inside it. Whatever you choose, keep it consistent if the tattoo has more than one date.

What is 2026 in Roman numerals for a tattoo?

2026 is MMXXVI: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6). It is entirely additive, so there is no subtractive pair to get wrong, which makes it one of the safer years to ink.

How do couples usually combine two dates?

The common layouts are two stacked lines (one date per line), two dates joined by a small separator on one line, or one date per person on matching placements. Converting each date separately and stacking them keeps both readable.

Do I need dots between the numerals?

Dots, small points or extra spacing between day, month and year keep the groups readable, especially inline on a wrist. Without a separator, XIVVIIMCMXCV runs together and can be misread. Stacked layouts can drop the dots because the line breaks do the separating.

How do I make sure the numerals are correct before inking?

Convert each part with a tool that validates both directions, then read the result back into numbers yourself. The converter on this site rejects any non-standard spelling, and the tattoo generator uses the same tested engine.
